How Powerlifting Works

Powerlifting is a weightlifting sport that is built around moving as much weight as possible through one single rep. Yes, you read that right, one rep. Of course when you’re training, you’ll need to perform more reps to build your strength, but when all is said and done in powerlifting, it is that single rep of the most weight you can manage that matters.

While powerlifting is a competitive sport, you don’t have to compete to call yourself a powerlifter, you can powerlift simply for the love of the sport. If you do intend to compete, there are certain guidelines you will have to adhere to, these are not the same for all meets, so you should always check your own. But this article offers a general overview.

Besides performing the 3 primary exercises that powerlifting is built around. You will boost your overall strength by performing other exercises, these are known as “accessory exercises”, accessory exercises are smaller exercises that you do to help boost your overall strength and power in your primary lifts.

This plan assumes that you have little to no powerlifting experience. If you do have experience you may want to try our Intermediate Powerlifting Workout Pack.

The intention of this plan is to offer you an introduction to powerlifting. By the end of this plan you will have mastered the three key moves in powerlifting; squat, deadlift and bench press.

You will also know how to work out your one rep max (1RM = the highest weight you can lift through one single repetition), and you will be training for incremental increases in your physical strength.

Over the course of 6 weeks you are encouraged to follow the workouts provided by this plan as written. Avoid switching the exercise order, and follow the rep/set ranges as provided.

Weeks 1 & 2 get you started, weeks 3-6 teach you how to make incremental increases in your lifts to make sure you keep getting stronger. Plans included:
